Getting Started

Just by way of introduction, we are Jim N' Jerry (otherwise known as the "Dynamite and the Cap" thus named by Jerry's dad when referring to the impetuous and unpredictable team we became collectively when we were young adults) Of course we've both matured far beyond that moniker now with the oncoming of thirty years or so... Well, then again... maybe not.

This blog is essentially an experiment. Jerry and I have been friends for years. We've shared a lot of things but, one of them is the "closet" aspiration of getting some writing published. We thought that perhaps if we commit to a blog post a day, something worthwhile might be spawned by it.

Of course when we were younger, that aspiration took the form (in our minds) of a book or something being published in a periodical of sorts. Years later, and with the assistance of the wonderful technology found in the interwebs, we have achieved the goal!! Well, maybe only in spirit.

I mentioned earlier that we were dubbed "Dynamite and the Cap" by Jerry's dad. He never really indicated which of us was the "dynamite" and which was "the cap" but, I don't think it really mattered. He was only referring to the fact that, individually, we could probably be trusted to accomplish any tasks asked of us but when we hooked up it was a whole other matter.

Somehow, collectively, we brought out both an adventurousness as well as a thirst for impetuous spontaneity that neither of us displayed when we were acting alone.

I remember first meeting with Jerry in our high school gym class. We both had scored a pass on actually participating in the current class and were relegated to the bleacher seats. We both had known each other through a common friend (Jerry's next door neighbor who was a classmate of mine I had known for a few years). As I recall, I "broke the ice" and started to yammer on about a variety of subjects which Jerry warmed up to over the course of the hour or so that we sat there.

What followed was that we quickly developed what would become a lifelong friendship that manifested itself in Jerry inspiring me out of my "hermit" shell. Throughout our remaining years in middle school and high school we were pretty much inseparable. We would eat lunch in the guidance counselor's office where we played hundreds of games of chess. In the evenings, we would often spend hours on the phone talking about all the subjects any adolescents in that era felt strongly enough to discuss.

In this blog, I'm going to attempt a variety of things. I'm anxious to see what my partner will be offering up. What should be following here is an accounting of thoughts and perhaps some trials at fiction writing. In truth, we're not really sure what is going to take place here so, gentle reader, please check back often. This could become interesting.

In any case, I'm hoping that at a minimum we'll both get some regular exercise of our writing muscles.

Thanks,

---Jim

  1. Hey, you got the first post so I'll post the first comment: Ditto
Those early dreams of being writers may finally be trotted out blinking into the light of day. I've known Jim for something like 35 years and though the days of spending most of our time together when not in school/work or sleeping has long passed it seems that few weeks have passed without some sort of contact, particularly with the advent of skype. I hope that convoluted run-on sentence won't be a harbinger of things to come from my end! And, yeah, this could get interesting. Hey, where's the spell check!!! "Oh my god, am I here all alone" Bob Dylan. Oh well, I guess I'll have to czech my spelling in my text edi... oh I see, it's built in. OK, we're cool.
